Hair extensions can be a game-changer when it comes to achieving the luscious locks you’ve always dreamed of. However, hair extension care requires dedication and patience. Many people fear that salon blowouts might damage their extensions, but with the right approach, you can enjoy the best of both worlds! You can have beautiful extensions and salon-quality styling.

In this comprehensive guide, we’ll explore the best practices to care for your hair extensions and ensure a flawless salon blowout. And true hair guru, Jessica Marino (who knows all things hair extensions and blowouts) is here to help!

Hair Extension Care

Choose the right extensions

Proper hair extension care starts with choosing the right extensions. Opt for high-quality, 100% human hair extensions, as they offer a more natural look and can withstand styling treatments better than synthetic alternatives. Choose extensions that match your natural hair texture and color to make maintenance and styling more seamless. Your hair stylist will guide you through this process from start to finish.

I would highly recommend getting a consultation before buying any hair. This will ensure you and your stylist are on the same page.

Establish a routine

Maintaining your hair extensions requires consistency. Create a routine that includes regular washing, conditioning, and styling. Wash your extensions every 5-7 days or as needed. Your extensions will get dirty, but because they are more fragile than your hair, they don’t need nearly as much washing. Avoid excessive washing, as this can strip the extensions of natural oils, leading to dryness. To this point, use sulfate-free, extension-friendly shampoos and conditioners. I am obsessed with all things Oribe for hair.

Detangle GENTLY

Regular, gentle detangling ensures that the extensions remain smooth and free of damage. Again, hair extensions are not nearly as resilient as your hair, so treat them with care, especially during the detangling process. Start by using a wide-tooth comb to remove any knots or tangles, beginning at the tips and working your way up.

Pro tip: hold the hair near the roots to prevent unnecessary stress on the extension bonds.

Continue hair extension care while you sleep

We all toss and turn when we sleep and that can wreak havoc on our tresses. Prevent unnecessary friction and tangling by protecting your extensions while you sleep. Opt for a silk or satin pillowcase, which reduces friction and minimizes hair breakage. Alternatively, tie your hair in a loose braid or ponytail before bedtime. I love all things kitsch for hair accessories.

Moderation is key with heat-styling

While high-quality human hair extensions can handle heat styling, it’s essential to use caution to prevent damage. Keep heat styling tools below 350°F (175°C) to avoid compromising the integrity of the hair.

Furthermore, always, always, ALWAYS, use a heat protectant product before styling. Heat protectants create a barrier between the hair and the heat source, reducing the risk of damage. K18 Hair products changed my life!

Get regular trims

Just like natural hair, extensions benefit from regular trims to remove split ends and maintain a healthy appearance. Schedule regular appointments with your stylist for a trim and check-up on the condition of your extensions. This proactive approach ensures that any potential issues are addressed before they escalate.

How to Achieve a Salon-quality Blowout with Hair Extensions

First things first, getting a salon blowout with hair extensions requires open communication with your stylist. Inform them about your extensions, including the type and method used for attachment. A skilled stylist will adjust their technique to ensure a fabulous blowout without compromising the integrity of your hair extensions.

Choose a professional salon

Not all salons are experienced in working with hair extensions. Choose a salon with stylists who have expertise in extension care and styling. Look for reviews, ask for recommendations, and schedule consultations to discuss your specific needs and concerns.

Trend alert: Jessica says, “blowout styles right now are full of volume and a more relaxed curl versus a blow-dry and beach curls with an iron.”

When Jessica did my blowout at my last appointment, she used a round brush with curlers added for volume.

Use the right products

Salon blowouts often involve the use of various styling products. Ensure that the products used are extension-friendly and free of harsh chemicals. Communicate with your stylist about your preferred products. And don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations. If she’s a true pro, she’ll be invested in the health and longevity of your hair and your extensions even after you leave the salon.

Pro tip: Jessica uses a heat styling, thermal protectant before a blowout. She says, “If you don’t create the foundation right, no blowout will ever work.” Check out the products she loves and trusts:
